Ancient Near East, northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A cast-bronze stamp seal with an abstract standing zebu figure acting as the handle. The zebu is a domesticated form of the Asian aurochs which became prevalent through selective breeding during the time of the ancient Indus Valley civilizations. The animal is depicted standing on an integral rectangular plinth with four delineated legs presenting a slender torso, a drooping tail, a large hump with a central piercing, and a pair of petite horns extending upwards from a non-existent head. The underside of the plinth has a series of incised concentric X-shaped designs which creates an intricate stamp when pressed against a surface. The figure is covered in thick layers of russet and green patina. Size: 1.125" L x 0.7" W x 1.2" H (2.9 cm x 1.8 cm x 3 cm).
