Kong Xiaoyu (孔小瑜; 1899 - 1984) Chinese traditional scroll painting, ink on paper laid to silk, hanging scroll. Signed and dated, in the Autumn of Jimao year (ca. 1939).
Captivating painting of dark and light stallions shuffling about by the waters edge, by Kong Xiaoyu (1899-1984). Her artwork is very realistic and many modern western painting techniques were used in conjunction with traditional Chinese artistic methods. A traveler is depicted refreshing himself while two horses prance through a salubrious meadow. Directly behind the steeds is an immense tree of substantial girth. The trunk is gnarled, and the bark is well defined with each branch tapering in to smaller and smaller repeating patterns. At the end of each branch bushels of foliage explodes outward filling up the sky. Just beyond the swaying limbs mountain-tops can bee seen looming from immeasurable heights. This painting displays highly refined brush technique and mastery of gradation in depth of ink. An obvious balance can be seen throughout especially between both light and dark areas which lend to the works overall harmony. A Single Column of cursive calligraphy, lines the left edge followed by two official red seals.

PROVENANCE:
From the heirloom collections of Wu Guozhen (吳國楨; October 21, 1903-June 6, 1984) was a Chinese political figure and historian, government official who served as mayor of Hankow (1932-1938), mayor of Chung-king (1939-1941), political vice minister of foreign affairs (1943-45), mayor of Shanghai (1946-1948), and governor of Taiwan (1950-1952) and the former Chairman of Taiwan Provincial Government. He resigned in 1953 and went to the United States.

K.C. Wu lived in the United States where he served as professor of Chinese history at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia. During his time in the United States, he wrote various works, including a detailed analysis on Chinese culture in the context of mythology and early history in his book The Chinese Heritage.

Wu is remembered mainly for his vital role in the formation of a liberal modern Taiwan and his anti-communist beliefs typical of a member of Kuomintang, but he is also remembered for his brave anti-Kuomintang rhetoric and turbulent disagreements with the more Russian-styled second President of Taiwan.

Kong Xiaoyu (孔小瑜; 1899 - 1984) formerly known as Xianying 憲英, was born in Kongjia Village, Zhuangqiao, Cixi. After working in Shanghai for the first time, he went to Hong Kong. In 1951, he resolutely returned to the mainland to participate in the construction of the mainland. After 1955, he was invited to teach at the Anhui Art School and served as the vice president of the Anhui Painting Academy. He was elected as the representative of the Anhui Provincial People's Congress. In his later years, he served as a professor at the Anhui Art School, a vice president of the Anhui Painting Academy, and a representative of the Provincial People's Congress.
He is good at flower Bogu, pursuing vivid image and loose feelings. And hard work hard to remember the ability to write in silence, from the three generations of bronzes, wide-ranging figures, mane, beasts, fish and insects to the shape of the body, ready to come out, everything is fine. His Bogu paintings are also called the lions of Zhang Shanyu ’s tiger and Xiong Songquan . Its outstanding expressiveness is called the first person after the year of Ren, and is one of the representatives of the " Marine Painting School ".
