ROBERT CHAILLOUX (FRENCH, 1913-2005) Oil on board, “Santons”; Santons are small handmade terracotta nativity scene figures, depicting all forms of Provencal life, including local animals; During the French Revolution, the government closed churches and banned nativity scenes. Santons were created using local clay as a form of protest against the government. The painting is accompanied by (3) Santons; signed lower left “Robert Chailloux”; Set in a gilt wood frame by Wunderly Brothers, Pittsburgh PA ; Condition - One of the Santons has a broken hat ; Measures: 14.5"H x 17.5"W; Frame: 23"H x 26"W
