Description
Two Cobalt-Stenciled Stoneware Canning Jars, Western PA and probably WV origin, circa 1875, both of tapered form with tooled shoulders and rounded "wax sealer" rims; one decorated with two large stenciled geometric designs, attributed to Alexander Conrad, New Geneva, PA; the other with diagonally-stenciled, scrolled flourish culminating in two bluebell blossoms, probably Palatine, WV origin. Larger canning jar with some wear to interior of rim, an Albany slip drip to front, and minor base nicks. Smaller jar with small chips to interior of rim, two tiny nicks to inner wax sealer rim, narrow 1 5/8" piece of clay adhered to underside, and a 1 3/8" in-the-firing surface fissure to base, extending 7/8" onto underside. H (of smaller jar) 7 1/8".
