This fascinating map of France delineates political divisions and is surrounded by vignettes depicting various important historical moments and events in French history, including French text along the bottom edge of the map. Loosely translated it states that this is a ‘Resume of the Principal Events in the History of France’. The events described begin in 496 with the reign of Clovis, considered the founder of the monarchy. Thereafter are named the principal players of French’s royal families, including such well-known names as Pepin, Charlemagne, Hugh Capet, on through more recent monarchs such as Henri IV, Louis XIV, Napoleon and on to Louis Phillipe and the founding of the Republic on 24 February 1848.

In addition to the monarchs named, there are also the names of famous figures in French history. Events depicted around the map in a series of vignettes include the storming of the Bastille, the coup of 18 Brumaire, Louis XVIII delivering the Charter of 1814, a scene from the July Revolution, and various portraits of revolutionary French leaders. The map is embellished with various figures along the top, many of which would constitute the contents of a traditional cornucopia.

Condition: This map is in B+ condition with slightly uneven toning and some foxing.
