Description
Ancient Egypt, Middle Kingdom to Late Dynastic period, 11th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 2050 to 332 BCE. A fine collection of mold-made faience amulets used to symbolically protect the body and soul of a recently-deceased individual. First is an enclosed wadjet (or wedjat or Eye of Horus), a sign of protection and good health. Second is a grazing cow with stylized udders, perhaps a zoomorphic depiction of Hathor, the goddess of the sky. Third is a standing amulet of Bes, the dwarf deity meant to protect the women and children of a household. Last is a deep-blue standing effigy of Sekhmet, the lioness goddess of warfare, strategy, and protecting the pharaoh. A beautiful ensemble from ancient Egypt! Size of largest (Sekhmet): 0.45" W x 1.3" H (1.1 cm x 3.3 cm).
