Description
This exceptional ancient Egyptian faience amulet would originally been bound within mummy wrappings. It was perhaps bound next to the embalming incision on the flank of the deceased where the protective powers of this amulet were believed to prevent malign influences from entering and to heal the wound.
This talisman would ensure safe passage to the afterlife and offer continued protective qualities thereafter to the deceased.
As a protective amulet used in this manner it has decoration only on one side.
The wonderful eye here depicts the eye of the ancient Egyptian god Horus. This symbol can be recognized immediately in all it's variations and uses over thousands of years of ancient Egyptian culture. The essential glyph shows a human eye with an exaggerated brow underneath which there is an stylized line evoking the cheek of the falcon. To one side a cosmic line extends through the outer corner of the eye.
The glaze which appears front and back intact in patches is a vivid greenish turquoise blue.
This rare protection amulet measures approximately 1 5/16" wide by 1 7/16" tall (34mm x 36mm).

Condition
It is in good condition with some discoloration to the faience. This amulet is over 3500 years old and is intact, strong and wearable. Please note there is no piercing to this piece to allow suspension to wear as a pendant it would need to be mounted in silver or gold. Alternatively it can be carried as a good luck charm protecting the owner.
