Circa 1848 Scarce Historic Antique Printed Textile; Early American yard goods, depicts President Zachary Taylor--Mexican War hero. The book "Threads of History" by Herbert Ridgeway Collins describes this printed textile (page 124, item #199) as follows; ?Glazed cotton roller print. Overall pattern with folk art equestrian portrait of Zachary Taylor and soldiers marching in front. The scene is vignetted with a pattern of a floral wreath of roses, rosebuds, and other flowers, broadly treated. Flowers and background are wood-blocked printed; the scenic motif was probably printed from a copper plate. The scene repeats each 18 inches. Taylor's uniform coat is blue and brown. He is sitting with one leg over the pommel of his saddle, writing with his right hand while his left arm is stretched upward. This is based on a description in Justin Smith's book, War with Mexico, that describes the calmness of Taylor at Palo Alto, May 8, 1846, directing his troops to 'Keep a bright lookout for them' (Mexican Troops). Taylor is seated on his favorite charger, Whitey. ?A stirring scene with American soldiers leaning into war while surrounding a furled American flag. Warm blues and browns, printed on cream colored fabric. Approximate size is 23-1/2" x 15" (an easily framable size for display).
