A MEXICAN RETABLO OF THE VIRGIN MARY, 19TH CENTURY, oil on canvas, the image horizontally bisected, a tortured figure in red robe hung by rope, bound with wood at her hands and metal shackles at her feet, flanked by two flaming candlesticks, surmounting an image of the Virgin Mary with a combination of iconography associated with the Virgen de Consolacion de Utrera and the Señora del Rosario, with a crown over her lacy hood, above an "A" shaped red dress with scrolling flower blooms and tendrils, and a blue cape, holding a small scepter in one hand and the Christ child with crown in the other, her body within a fiery aureole, centering a lower crescent moon with a face, flanked by flowering urns and flaming candlesticks, within a red curtain. 17 1/2" x 13 1/2"

Some darkening of paint, brown surface soil, and minor surface wear, but overall in very good condition, wear commensurate with age and use.
