Description
Magna Graecia, Apulia, Canosa, early Hellenistic Period, ca. late 4th century BCE. A beautiful section from a large amphora or krater, decorated with a female holding a mirror and to her right - a shield and weapon probably held by a male figure who is not visible. Above the woman's head is a fish. All is painted in bright pink, blue, brown, and white hues. One can only imagine how stunning this piece was in ancient Italy! Size: 7" W x 4.875" H (17.8 cm x 12.4 cm); 6.25" H (15.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Canosa, or Canosion as it was known then, was a major center of the ceramics and pottery trade when it was a Greek polis. It produced truly unique pottery, completely different in decoration style (although not in shape) from earlier and neighboring traditions. The clay is buff, with the decoration applied directly to it without the use of slip. The entire body was covered with white, with a second ground of pink applied as the background to the decorative/figural program.
Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection
