Description
Northern Europe, Celtic culture, Late Bronze Age, ca. 800 to 500 BCE. An exceptionally rare and beautiful cast bronze strap, probably used for wiping sweat and dirt from the back of a horse, much like a strigil used for humans. The strap terminates in two spiral-shaped coils at each end, forming handles. Horses were beloved animals for the Celts, kept by elite members of society for use in war and sport. Fine items like this one attest to their importance to their owners. Size: 19.75" W x 2.1" H (50.2 cm x 5.3 cm); 5.35" H (13.6 cm) on included custom stand.
