Greek Hellenistic Terracotta Head of Horse
Greek Hellenistic Terracotta Head of Horse
Item Details
Description
Greece, Hellenistic period, ca. late 4th to 2nd century BCE. A fascinating mold-made head of a horse, once part of a larger statue. The head is sleek and thin, with flaring, wide nostrils, a slightly open mouth, small eyes that were probably once painted or had inlays. A bridle is around the forehead and nose. The mane is carefully coiffed into tight buns. Size: 3.95" W x 5.45" H (10 cm x 13.8 cm); 12.2" H (31 cm) on included custom stand.

Who is this horse? Who made it? We know that Hellenistic people loved their horses - Alexander the Great, of course, is famous for his love of Bucephalus - and we also know that horse racing was hugely popular in classical and Hellenistic Greece among the upper classes. Races held at the sanctuaries of Olympia, Delphi, Isthmia, and Nemea are illustrated on vases and frescoes throughout antiquity. The flaring nostrils, open mouth, and tight coiffure all suggest that the animal is a prized racehorse, fresh from being exercised at the track.
