Item Details
Description
Native American, Alaska, Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A fantastic aged example of a wooden ladle, its handle carved to look like a totem pole, with two anthropomorphic heads and a tall bird figure forming the finial. The bowl of the spoon is deeply scooped and dug out, forming a crescent shape with almost no edges. The piece is a fine demonstration of the Pacific Northwestern carving style. This ceremonial spoon is of the style made for the potlatch. Size: 3.2" W x 16.5" H (8.1 cm x 41.9 cm); 16.75" H (42.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Nootka wooden ladles are very valuable, like this example offered at Bonhams in 2017: http://artkhade.com/en/object/109033/fKJULf/a-nootka-spoon-alaska
