Description
ENGLISH / CONTINENTAL GENRE PRINTS, LOT OF SIX, some hand-colored, one aquatint, including a Boydell example titled "SHAKSPEARE (sic) / Merry Wives of Windsor / Act II. Scene I." after the work of Rev. Matthew William Peters (English, 1742-1814), from Boydell's illustrated edition of Shakespeare's dramatic works, engraved by Robert Thew, an example engraved by Anthony Walker, titled "On the Noble Game of Back-Gammon", and a Robert Sayer hunt scene example, "Going Out in the Morning", after James Seymour (English, 1702-1752), engraved by Pierre-Charles Canot. Unframed. Most 18th century. Smallest 12" x 9 1/2" OA, largest 26" x 20 3/8" OA.
Good overall condition, expected toning, several described examples with minor tears or creases to edges/margins, "Merry Wives of Windsor" example with some foxing throughout, losses and tears to one edge associated with being removed from binding, "Back-Gammon" example with restored margin, and repaired tear from top edge running into image, hunt scene with horizontal tear running most of the way along bottom edge, which appears to be in line with impression edge, two undescribed examples with one or more significant tears to edges or margins, some of which enter image, one undescribed example laid on board, with minor losses to margins, and restoration to image.
Provenance: Property deaccessioned by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Williamsburg, VA. All proceeds to benefit the Collections Acquisition Fund.
