Description
ENGLISH COUNTRY SCENIC PRINTS, LOT OF SEVEN, including "THE NORTH-WEST PROSPECT OF MAIDSTONE, IN THE COUNTY OF KENT", with description with key in lower margin, and "Sam.l & Nath.l Buck delin. Et Sculp. According to Act of Parliament, 1738" for Samuel Buck (English, 1696-1779) and Nathaniel Buck (English, fl. 1724-1759); "Broadgate in Leicestershire Being the Seate of ye Rt. Hon.ble: the Earle of Stamford", with central crest device in bottom margin, and lettered under the image "L. Knyff Del." and "H. Hulsbergh, Sculp"; "A Perspective View of Kendall House near Isleworth", lettered under image in part "Chatelain Delin", "London Printed for & Sold by Robert Wilkinson No. 58 Cornhill", and "W.H. Toms Sculp"; and an aquatint titled "VIEW OF OXFORD / from the Gallery in the Observatory" above "London, Pub.d July 1st, 1814 at 101 Strand for R. Ackermann's History of Oxford", and under the image "W. Turner del.t" and "J. Bluck, Sculp.t"; most hand-colored on laid paper. Unframed. Together with a later restrike example "Milton in Northamptonshire, the Seat of Earl Fitzwilliam." Eight pieces total. Most 18th century. Smallest 7 1/2" x 11 1/2" OA, largest 21 3/4" x 27" OA, Buck example 12 1/2" x 32 1/4" OA.
Good to very good condition overall, expected toning, some with expected fold-lines, most with minor holes or losses associated with being removed from book binding, some with minor stains or foxing, Maidstone example laid down on board, one undescribed example trimmed and having some minor tears or losses.
Provenance: Property deaccessioned by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Williamsburg, VA. All proceeds to benefit the Collections Acquisition Fund.
