JOSEPH B. SPRAQUE (MASSACHUSETTS, 19TH CENTURY) PORTRAIT OF A MAN, watercolor and gouache on birch bark, subject believed to be noteworthy Boston actor of the time, William Warren (1812-1888), signed lower right and inscribed "Birch Bark" at lower edge. Housed in a 19th-century frame. Circa 1875. 12" x 6" sight, 18 5/8" x 12 5/8" OA.
Good visual condition with minor toning and discoloration. Frame with minor wear. Not examined out of frame.
Catalogue Note: Little is known of artist, Joseph B. Sprague (19th century), although there is record of his filing for a patent in 1874 on a "new and useful Improvement in Pictures", namely watercolor painting on birch bark.
