JOHN WILLIAM "UNCLE JACK" DEY (RICHMOND, VA 1912-1978) OUTSIDER ART PAINTING, model airplane enamel on board, a fantastical nocturnal scene with vivid coloration, inscribed "VOODOO ZOMBIE'S (sic)" at lower edge and signed "UNCLE JACK" lower right. Housed in possibly original black-painted frame. Circa 1970. 17 3/4" x 24 1/4" sight, 21" x 27 1/4" OA.
Painting in excellent overall condition, ghost with very minor abrasion. Frame with minor wear.
Provenance: Property from the estate of Dr. Stephen Goodyear, Charlottesville, VA.

Catalogue Note: A native of Richmond, Virginia, John William Dey (1912-1978) began painting upon his retirement from the city's police force in 1955. Known as "Uncle Jack" to the children in the neighborhoods on his beat, Dey typically used model airplane paint in his whimsical compositions. The Smithsonian holds several works by the artist.
Dr. Stephen Goodyear was the son of Anson Conger Goodyear, the first president of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Like his father, Dr. Goodyear was a devoted collector of fine art and antiques.
