AMERICAN FOLK ART CARVING OF A WOMAN, body carved from the solid, applied arm, the commanding one-armed figure with finger pointed. Retains an untouched dry surface with warm color. Fourth quarter 19th century. 12 1/2" HOA.
Expected age cracks and areas of wear. No evidence of other arm ever having been attached.
Provenance: Property from the estate of Dr. Stephen Goodyear, Charlottesville, VA.
Catalogue Note: Dr. Stephen Goodyear was the son of Anson Conger Goodyear, the first president of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Like his father, Dr. Goodyear was a devoted collector of fine art and antiques.
