Description
NEW YORK FOLK ART MEMORIAL WITH VIRGINIA INTEREST, watercolor and ink on paper, depicting two urn-top monuments beneath two weeping willow trees, one inscribed "Brewster Cleaves was drowned at Richmond, Nov. 20, 1826", the other "In memory of Betsey Ann Cleaves, died March the 1, 1824. Aged 19yrs, 6 mo.", two four-line verses across bottom. Housed under glass in a period frame. Circa 1827. 6 1/2" x 7 3/4" sheet, 9" x 11" OA.
Very good condition with a few very minor losses/tears to edges, light scattered foxing/spotting, and small stain.
Provenance: From the DeSapri Collection, Granville, OH.
Catalogue Note: Both Brewster Cleaves (1801-1826) and Betsey Ann Cleaves (c. 1805-1824) were born in Setauket, Long Island, NY. Brewster was a mate on the schooner "Effort". He drowned in the James River at Richmond, VA on November 20, 1826.
