STAMPED "KEESEE & PARR / RICHMOND", VIRGINIA DECORATED STONEWARE JAR, salt-glazed, "3" gallon capacity mark, shouldered cylindrical form with bead below the collared, square rim, applied arched handles. Brushed cobalt upright tulip and foliage decoration on each side. David Parr Jr. (1819-1882) working as Keesee & Parr (active 1858-1865), Richmond, VA. 1858-1865. 15" H, 8" D rim.
Loss of most of one handle, several chips to outer edge of rim, crack from under base up one side ending as a Y, other hairlines to body.
Literature: For the latest research on Parr in Richmond see Hunter (ed.) - Ceramics in America 2013, pp. 210-213 - "The Remarkable 19th-Century Stoneware of Virginia's Lower James River Valley", by Kurt Russ, Rob Hunter, Oliver Mueller-Heubach, and Marshall Goodman.
Provenance: From a Virginia collection.
Catalogue Note: Very few pieces marked for the firm of Keesee & Parr have been recorded. The stamp used on this jar is a larger variation of the firm's standard mark with a faint "NIA" (being part of Virginia) visible below Richmond. Only one other example of this specific maker's mark has been recorded. In addition, the "3" capacity mark is different from others used by the firm.
