Details: Original Sculpture Artwork NATIVE NORTH AMERICAN SOAPSTONE CARVING OF MOTHER EAGLE 20th Century Indigenous Canadian Howa'kayi Ne Iroqrafts Ontario Canada
This 20th century indigenous North American carving in steatite stone depicts two eagles, a turtle representing Mother Earth, and a false face. One side features a row of nine intricately carved feathers above a turtle turning its head toward the eagles. The opposite side depicts more of the turtle's shell and the false face with its long hair.
A catalog number from the Iroqrafts Arts Center in Ontario is etched into the base of the sculpture and reads: "103-SN-3957". The name "Howa'knyi'ne" ("A Stick Placed Beside Him") is etched beside the catalog number. The piece was carved in 1981 and comes from Nation Onondaga, Clan Wolf, from the Six Nations. In English, the artist is known as Arnie Henry, an indigenous artist who currently resides on the New Credit Reserve.
The piece measures approximately 8.25" across its base and approximately 9.75" at its highest point.
