Description
A lovely vintage wooden mask from the Dan peoples, Cote D'ivoire, West Africa. Carved wood with a superb and refined carving style, open eyes accented with metal strips and remains of a red textile on the lips. The mask has an area of organic matter on the forehead where once large leaves were likely attached and an old nail was driven into the forehead.Traditionally the Dan "zakpai" mask were known as "runner" masks, They are widespread among the northern Dan (because of the dry area they are mostly needed there). Worn by the fastest runner of the village, they are worn when the runner is to warn the inhabitants in case a fire breaks out. The mask itself measures 9.5 x 5.5 inches. A metal display stand can be included for an additional $34.00
