Description
Gold ring with Roman carnelian intaglio showing(it is difficult to see) a helmuted soldier or god or war, on the right, facing an urn or funerary vase on the left,perhaps to make an offering or sacrifice.The best photograph of the image is photo number 7, when you look to the right, you will see the helmut, the face in profile, the neck is obscured by the white color of the stone,below that the large arm reaching out to the left and the urn to the left is visible but sort of difficult to see in the photograph, easier to see in person.The ring is size 6, 5.5 dwts.Estate of Milton Horowitz,MD.2nd century AD.Each side of this mounting has a rose cut diamond, and the mounting appears to be circa 1830.
Condition
Wear to the surface, discoloration to the intaglio either due to natural changes in color in the stone or discoloration from time and changes to the appearance of the stone due to exposure to the elements.
Carving very light, possibly due to overall wear to the surface.18k gold mounting after 1750 and before 1850, Georgian period most likely with two rose cut diamonds on either side of the intaglio.
