Description
Ca. 200 AD.A gold ring with a circular hoop and a bezel set with carnelian stone intaglio depicting an emperor, possibly Caracalla in his left profile. Caracalla ruled as emperor from 198 to 217 AD and enjoys a chequered reputation, portrayed by the ancient sources as a tyrant, and was killed by a disaffected soldier in 217. However, he also granted universal citizenship to all male subjects living under the Roman Empire, greatly expanding the legal rights of vast swathes of the population.
