West Africa, Nigeria, Igbo peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A finely-aged example of a horned anthropomorphic wooden personal shrine figure known as an "Ikenga." The Ikenga is a ritual object in Igbo society that symbolizes self-sufficiency and individual perseverance. Simple forms of these figures can be merely horns protruding from a wooden block, the horns being symbolic of the aggression of the male animal. This is a more-realized figure with a carved head and abstract bodily form, carved three-dimensionally with detailing on all sides, with an arching pair of horns on top. The figure is painted with a pale-brown pigment. Comes with custom display stand. Size: 9.125" H (23.2 cm); 9.75" H (24.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
Age-commensurate surface wear, losses to one side of base and part of one horn, chips and nicks to body and pigmentation, and a stable fissure on the base, otherwise very good. Nice earthen and mineral deposits throughout.
