Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $400**

East Asia, China, late Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A pair of matched wooden panels with mortise and tenon style joins. Each panel depicts a fierce chimera creature, perhaps a qilin, within a floral setting. The bodies of the animals, which stand with their legs wide apart as if running, and their heads twisted back, are decorated with lightly incised floral motifs. The qilin was a hooved, dragon-like chimera said to appear at the arrival of a sage or illustrious ruler. These panels were made to be decorative, probably in a home or temple. Size: 8" W x 16.5" H (20.3 cm x 41.9 cm)
