Description
Thomas Boxell of Brighton was a retailer who handled, among other things, clocks of Thomas Cole. The book on Thomas Cole by J.B. Hawkins noted that Boxell was working for him from 1845 to 1889 and identified as a "Watch and Clockmaker" and obviously catered for a wealthy and retired London clientele, purchasing the majority of his clocks from manufacturers in London and selling jewelry, silver and clocks." The 18K yellow gold cased pocket watch is dubbed “The Observatory” both on the immaculate porcelain double sunk dial and the movement.Small batch production as the dial, case and movement are all stamped 35 of 478.The open face case has a domed plexi that really makes the dial pop, notably with itÂ’s curved edges. Moving over to the back we can read that the watch was given as a token of appreciation to Col. F. Guy Vivian for his service to Bexhill, London as honorary secretary in 1910.Also interesting on the pocket watch is the up-down wind indicator. Some of the highest end railroad watches featured this. Referred to as a power reserve indicator on modern watches, it visually communicates how much wind remains in the watch on a sub-dial at 12 O’clock.Freshly Serviced24hr Accuracy Reading: + 1 Minute
