Item Details
Description
**First Time At Auction**

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fierce mold-made ceramic spout in the form of a lion's head. Liquid could pour through his elongated neck and out of his open, snarling mouth. Made to be applied to a larger vessel, lion motifs were common in Rome, and Romans, always fans of exotic animals, seemed to have a special affection for the species. Size: 1.6" W x 1.75" H (4.1 cm x 4.4 cm); 3.8" H (9.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex collection of Dr. G.S., Nuremberg, Germany; ex collection of Hans Piehler (1874 - 1961)
