Roman Terracotta Torso of Woman with Cherub
Roman Terracotta Torso of Woman with Cherub
Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A mold-made ceramic torso of a woman, dressed in a stola (dress) held in place at one shoulder by a large, disc-shaped fibula. Her hair is covered by a veil and her face is nicely depiced. She has a small cherub perched atop one shoulder, his head tilted towards her as if leaning in to give advice. This item was probably made to be a funerary monument, and probably represents a real woman. Cherubs are also commonly found on funerary monuments. When first made and displayed, this would have been brightly painted. Size: 5.85" W x 8.2" H (14.9 cm x 20.8 cm); 9.2" H (23.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection
