Two Manuscripts ++ Uncorrected Proofs for Giles Goat-Boy, 289 galley sheets, tall 4to, sent to reviewer “Bob” by Douglas Andrews, Publicity Manager at Doubleday, cautioning him that Barth has already made several changes, some of which he cites in his letter. His typed and signed note once pasted on the front wrap of the Proof, now detached leaving dark glue stain on the cover which is also separated. Barth has Signed & Inscribed the title sheet: “only like, always to Be, until as they we, but one placeless, timeless, nameless throb of Being / John Barth 9/18/66” (quoting Billy Bocksfuss in Goat-Boy). ++ Letters. Typescript (8 ½ x 11" sheets) with manuscript changes (unclear whose), incomplete; pages are numbered in red ink, beginning with 139, ending with 216. Page 139 is a cover letter dated Baltimore, Summer 1977, to “Dear Reader” in which Barth explains that the title of this work is Letters, “a 7-part fiction-in-progress, 5/7the (sic) complete”. There will be 88 letters exchanged in this epistolary novel among 7 correspondents. The novel was published in 1979. This typescript has numerous, mostly brief manuscript changes in blue and black pencil. Apparently the typescript includes letters 52 and 53 from Part 5, and 6th and 7th are appended.
