Item Details
Description
This silk scroll painting after Kano Tan'yu (1602-1674) of a delightful troop of Gibbons of all ages, intricately furred by the artist. hanging from a tree in the foreground of a waterfall is a common theme in Japanese painting, called Monkeys Reaching For the Moon. The gibbons hang down, clinging from all angles, to reach the water below, where the moon is reflected. Unfortunately, several splashes can be seen which has distorted the elusive reflection. This painting represents the grasping soul of humanity. Edo Period 18/19th century. Japan
