Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, Northern Washington state to Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Makah or Nootka tribe, ca. 1900 CE. A beautiful and expertly-woven hat comprised of cut strips of spruce root and cedar wood with a large brim and a square top. Much of the brim displays a decorative register of abstract geometric motifs in red hues - perhaps fish, birds, or native iconography - atop a black ground. Hats created in this region were worn by natives during any number of outdoor tasks, though they oftentimes represent the extensive trade network that existed prior to the age of exploratory expeditions between the indigenous and American and European mariners. A rare, elegant, and wearable example! Size: 15.25" W at widest point x 5.5" H (38.7 cm x 14 cm).
