Description
A rare Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre Vase and Lid (Malfrey Pot), entitled Ghostly Wood. Produced at Wedgwood's Etruria Works ceramics factory in Stoke-on-Trent (Staffordshire, England), ca. 1916-1920, by artist Daisy Makeig-Jones (1881-1945). The vase has a bulbous body, with small neck and close-fitting lid. The decoration is inspired by the illustrations of The Legend of Croquemitaine by Gustave Dor, with woods, ghosts, fairies, and goblins. Bone china, with blue, green, red, brown, iridescent colors with underglaze, lustre, and gilt. The rich ornamentation of Fairyland Lustre was extremely popular during the 1920s Art Deco period. Makeig-Jones's fairies and myth subjects also reflected popular Edwardian illustrators including Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac and Danish artist Kay Nielsen.
