Description
A George III English sterling silver case. Hallmarks IR for John Reily, London, 1818. The case (possibly cigar or cigarette) with two compartments, is hallmarked on the inside of the top hinged lid and on the bottom inside of the lower case. It appears that the bottom hallmarks were turned inside in order to have room for the engraving, which reads: Earl of Harborough, Stapleford Park, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire (see photos). Measures 5-1/8" high, 3-1/8" wide, 1" deep. Weighs 209.7 grams.
HISTORY NOTE: The Earl of Harborough was a title in the Peerage of Great Britain, created in 1719 and became extinct in 1859 upon the death of the 6th Earl, Robert Sherard (1797-1859). Stapleford Park is a Grade I listed country house, it was originally the seat of the Sherard family, later the Earls of Harborough.
