Large and impressive carved, incised and painted mat glaze lamp vase with dogwood decoration on a special shape, done by Kataro Shirayamadani in 1903. Three dimensional dogwood flowers and limbs are applied and carved to make up the base of the form while the upper portion has many incised and painted dogwood blossoms, limbs and leaves encircling. Marks include the Rookwood logo, the date, Special Shape number S 1740 and the incised cypher of the artist. Height 18 1/2 inches. Uncrazed. There are a couple of minor nicks to high points and unobtrusive firing lines in the base typical of pieces with this much applied and carved clay. The vase comes with a ceramic cap and duplex burner (not shown) but no shade. It looks better as a vase to be sure and it is thought to be the largest carved mat piece done by Shirayamadani.
