Description
Pair of Chinese Qing Dynasty DouCai porcelain plates. Shallow curvature flaring upward to form the rim, with a slightly raised footing. The rim has a double blue ring around the inner edge. The interior is adorned with hand-painted floral design, depicting variegated blooms amongst the crag of a rock, with two fluttering butterflies. The butterfly is a symbol of connubial bliss, of delight and of summer. On Chinese porcelain specifically, a pair of butterflies symbolizes the souls of the forefathers. DouCai means “colors which fit together" and can be seen by the harmoniously painted floral design covering the bowls outer surface. The artistry is a combination of underglaze cobalt blue outlines and enamels added on top of the fired glaze, within the outlines. This glazing technique was invented during the Ming, Xuande period but are mostly related to the Ming, Chenghua rule from (1465-87). The blue elements of the design were painted under the glaze. The clay is very fine, with a brilliant glaze finish that was applied by a meticulous craftsman.
Mark on base, a six underglaze blue script -KaiShu- characters enclosed within two fine rings, Made in The Years of YongZheng Reign Period of Great Qing.
Dimensions: 1-5/8" H x 8-3/4" Dia. (each)
