Delicate Xuande Blue hand-painted brush-washer. Shallow basin circumscribed with a curvaceous wall of porcelain. The wall is decorated in intricate patterns if soaring five-claw dragons intermingled with cumulus clouds, and flaming mist. The focal point is a painting of a central flowing dragon with its visage staring outward toward the user. Dragon is the symbol of the Emperor, the Son of Heaven, eternity, Yang and Yin, male vigor and fecundity. The artistry is a combination of underglaze cobalt blue outlines and enamels added on top of the fired glaze, within the outlines. This glazing technique was invented during the Ming, Xuande period but are mostly related to the Ming, Chenghua rule from (1465-87). The blue elements of the design were painted under the glaze. The clay is very fine, with a brilliant glaze finish that was applied by a meticulous craftsman.
