Extraordinary, large Chinese Tibetan Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) gilt bronze Bodhisattva Maitreya Buddha sitting in a meditative posture. The bodhisattva of loving kindness and the coming buddha of the future aeon - currently residing in the Tushita heaven.
Beautiful and peaceful, Maitreya in with one face and two hands performing the Dharma Teaching mudra (gesture) at the heart while holding the stems of two utpala flowers blossoming at both ears supporting on the right a water flask and on the left a Dharma Wheel. Adorned with gold and jewel ornaments, earrings, necklaces, bracelets and the like. A large crown rest upon his head and his hair is put up into the traditional bun adorned with an ornament at the apex. He wears various flowing silk scarves and lower robes; seated in the vajra posture on a moon disc and lotus blossom surrounded by fine gold rays emanating to form a nimbus and areola of light. Bronze is in beautiful condition with minimal marring of the surface.
Extensive trace of gilt and red pigment on hair and lips.
Underside with incised quatrefoil flora-form petal visvavajra surrounding the centralized DaiJi.

Mark on the moon disc pedestal, incised twelve script -KaiShu- characters, Made in the third year third month sixteenth days of TianQi reign of the Great Ming Dynasty.
