Description
Chinese Ming Dynasty porcelain Huluping vase. Double gourd resemblance, bulbous lower section converging into a lemon-shape midsection and finishing into a slender bottleneck at the top. The bottom forms a substantial ring-base with a flat offset face. Delicately decorated around the exterior with variegate tones and shades of cobalt blue, with glazed elderly sage figurines in a terraced landscape. A trotting deer moves through a mountainous landscape surrounding the midsection, and the collar is interspersed with floral blooms shooting upward toward the opening. The glaze appearance on the blue painting resembled the texture of an orange peel "ju-pi" (chu-pi) or a chicken skin. The glaze terminates slightly before the foot rim, showing a mixture of creme-colored clay and white glaze flecks left after the firing process. Revealed the pale-creme ground with burnt orange and darker spots in the firing with some white glazed spots on foot rim.
Mark on base, a six underglaze blue seal script -KaiShu- characters enclosed within double fine ring, Made in The Years of ChongZhen Reign Period of Great Ming (1611-1644).
