Item Details
Description
A CINNABAR-RED OVERLAY TURQUOISE-BLUE GLASS 'CRABS' SNUFF BOTTLE, QING DYNASTY

Carved and neatly incised overlay glass. China, late 18th- 19th century

Delicately carved through the cinnabar-red overlay to the opaque turquoise ground with two crabs amidst lotus plants, the base formed as a lotus leaf.
The combination of red overlay and turquoise glass became fashionable particularly towards the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries. The turquoise-blue background is evocative of the summer sky leading to the typical design of landscape and outdoor scenes. The color combination with the design of the crabs in the present lot is therefore rather unusual.

Shape: Flattened pear shape
Hollowing: Standard
Mouth, neck and lip: Elongated cylindric neck with flat top and symmetric mouth
Base: Formed as a part of the lotus plant, with round convex center revealing the turquoise ground
Design, marks, school: For possible attributions, please see literature comparison
Stopper: Glass in imitation of coral on an organic platelet
Height of the bottle with stopper: 8.4 cm.
Width of the mouth: 6 mm.
Width of the neck: 14 mm.
Condition: Excellent, with one minuscule, almost invisible chip to depiction and two very tiny nibblings to top of neck
Provenance: Stephen Max Kellen, founder of the American Academy in Berlin; THE ANNA-MARIA AND STEPHEN KELLEN FOUNDATION, NEW YORK
