Item Details

Description

Unusual late 19th century Japanese pottery Shigaraki ware chaire (tea caddy for storing powdered green tea used in tea ceremony) of bulbous shape. The piece was made at Shigaraki kilns - one of the six ancient kilns of Japan - and displays typical coarse body with large sand particles, freely applied gray glaze with white slip streaks and a touch of red by the mouth. The lid is lined with gold paper on the inside, in excellent condition. Height with cover 3 1/8 inches. Comes from a small New England collection of tea ceremony items.
