Description
A CLOISONNÉ TEAPOT WITH HANDLE ATTRIBUTED TO NAMIKAWA YASUYUKI
Colored enamel cloisonné on silver. Japan, Meiji period
An astoundingly fine, rich and diversely crafted beak-spouted teapot with a movable handle, a lid and three legs. Kiku (chrysanthemum) blossoms on the underside, many geometrically shaped flowers on the straight sides, reishi (longevity mushroom) contours containing birds and tama pearls at the top. The lid shows a very dense and fine floral composition; the knob shows a silver chrysanthemum.
Namikawa Yasuyuki (1845-1927) was one of the most famous and brilliant Japanese cloisonné artists. 1886 he was awarded the honorary title of ‘Teishitsu Gigeiin’ (artist-craftsman to the imperial household).
Condition: Good condition – one of the four silver chrysanthemum screws is missing
Provenance: From an Austrian private collection
A similar piece, also attributed to Namikawa Yasuyuki, sold at Bonhams 21st March 2018 lot 2226.
This fine selection of Japanese cloisonné pieces (nos. 16-33) comes from an art dealer’s collection who acquired the pieces over 15 years, most of them from Austrian flea markets, fairs and estates. He developed a passion and deep understanding for the incredibly cumbersome technique of cloisonné which is reflected in the selection, featuring the great names of Namikawa Yasuyuki and Namikawa Sosuke.
HEIGHT with knob 7.5 CM, HEIGHT with handle 14.5 CM, DIAMETER with spout 16 CM
