Description
An intricate, colorful, glowing gilt, expertly-painted Satsuma teapot with a phoenix spout and a dragon handle that has unbelievable miniscule paintings.A low fired clay that has been covered in a fine crackle glaze and then decorated with panels of court scenes. These panels are surrounded by fabric designs in iron red, black and gilt., as well as flowers and sea waves. The line quality is exceptional. The painting is so very minute but all perfectly executed. The pot has a matching lid that fits snugly and has an unglazed flange that fits the mouth of the teapot. It is also very finely painted and has a gilded knob. The teapot has a four-pad foot that is unglazed. The base is glazed. The interior has a cream colored glaze. There is a mark on the underside of the lid with two characters in a rectangular box. One of the characters is worn.MEASUREMENTS5” (12.7 cm) long x 3 ¼” (8.3 cm) wide x 3 ¾” (9.5 cm) tall. Weighs 5.3 oz (150 g)CONDITIONThe teapot has no cracks, but it does have a piece missing from the spout where the beak of the phoenix would be. There is also a chip from the edge of the lid. The dragon handle shows some wear to the gold painting. As mentioned above, the cartouche under the lid is partially worn. Otherwise the paintings are still very fresh and complete.A real tour de force of the potters art. The painting is unbelievable.ITEM IDPot-2469ITEM TYPEAntiqueTYPEPottery, SatsumaPURPOSETeapotsORIGINJapan • JapaneseSTYLEMeijiCOLORGold, Red, White
