Description
Vintage wooden mask from the Kumu peoples, Congo / DRC, Africa. KUMU masks, called "nsembu" or "ibole", which appear in paired dances that contrast male and female roles during initiations into the secret "nkunda" divination society. Carved wood with an archaic and primitive style mineral pigment paint and incised linear decoration. The mask interior and edges all show wear and handling, suggesting possible ceremonial use. The mask itself measures 10.5 inches tall x 6 inches wide. The display stand was not included with this lot, however one can be provided for an additional $34.00 after auction.
