Description
1737 De Officiis CICERO Rome Political Philosophy Verona Italian Uffizi Ramanzin
“A room without books is like a body without a soul.” ― Marcus Tullius Cicero
Cicero’s “De Officis” describes the best way to live, behave, and work. It also depicts Roman politics and way of life during the Roman Republic after the overthrow of Julius Caesar. This work is notably famous for being the third book ever printed and that “during the 15th-century, ‘De Officiis’ was the pinnacle of moral philosophy” (Baldwin, 590). This work was an important work in English schools through the start of the 18th-century and was a major influence on the works of John Locke.
This fine 1737 edition was published in Verona by Dionigi Ramanzini, and is printed completely in Italian. Other Ramanzini editions of this work feature Latin and Italian; however, according to Paitoni, the printing errors exist in the Latin/Italian editions. (Paitoni, 256)
