A large Chancay Cuchimilco stargazer idol, c. AD 1000 – 1200, hollow-bodied and boldly painted with dark brown details against a creme slip. The figure wears a head band with lovely geometric decoration (representing textile), bracelets and crossing bands over his chest. Ritual tattooing or body decoration is represented on the face and wrists of the figure, the images on the wrists appearing to depict fish and birds. These figures are thought to have served either as companions or guardians of the deceased and were placed within tombs. Dimensions: 14 x 9 in (35.4 x 22.8 cm).
