Item Details
Description
A Silas Claw Wedding Vase with horned toads, c. 1986-7, the lizards in relief and painted agave or century plant with bloom. H: 7 3/8 in (18.6 cm). Silas (c. 1913-2002) and Bertha Claw (1926 - present) used clay from a local deposit and ground prehistoric pottery sherds, which were ground on a metate, as temper. Bertha would create the vessels and Silas would apply the appliques. Their vessels remained true to Navajo tradition per their forms, but they added their own style with the use of appliques and acrylic paints. Their pottery is well known and displayed in the Smithsonian Museum. Ex Montrose, California private collection.
