Description
**Originally Listed At $600**
Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Moche V, 600 to 800 CE. A mold-made figural stirrup vessel in the form of a seated man wearing a poncho and holding a small animal underneath it. The animal may be a deer, a llama, or a dog, and the man holds it close in to his body, with one hand on the haunches and the other on the chest; the animal is turned to face the viewer, its ears perked. Is this a beloved pet, an animal about to be sacrificed, or both? The man's face is grim, his eyes wide, his mouth set, with a prominent nose and deep laugh lines that suggest he is older. Atop his head is a cap; he wears tremendous round spool earrings and a draped necklace/pectoral has been painted onto his poncho. The handle and spout of the bottle are relatively small compared to the size of the figure. Size: 7.15" L x 6" W x 7.5" H (18.2 cm x 15.2 cm x 19 cm)
Provenance: private Salter collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA
