East Asia, China, late Qing dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely and large brush and mirror set both covered with red cinnabar that his been meticulously carved - the large faces presenting a scene featuring a peacock amidst a field of flowers - perhaps chrysanthemums; the handles also adorned with this floral theme. Cinnabar as been used in China since the Song dynasty when artisans used it to color lacquerware. Size: both measure 10.875" L (27.6 cm)
