Description
12th-14th century AD. A bronze bifacial cross pendant with hinged suspension loop, to one face low relief image of Mary Theotokos with infant Jesus flanked by nimbate busts on three sides, enigmatic Greek inscription, to the reverse Corpus Christi in colobium with flanking busts and text. 75 grams, 10cm (4"). Property of a British gentleman; formerly in the private collection of Russian businessman Yuri Golubev (1942-2007), some of his collection was published in his book 'Symbols and Images'; acquired Bonhams, London, 27 April 2006, lot 267; formerly in a European private collection, acquired in the 1950s-1960s; accompanied by a copy of the auction catalogue pages.
